Why use kraft paper?
As awareness of environmental issues continues to rise, consumers are increasingly turning their allegiance to eco-conscious businesses and products. As a business owner, it's easy to get overwhelmed by the plethora of new terms and products that have popped up over the years for eco-friendly design. If your uncertainty prevents you from incorporating eco-friendly practices into your business, read on. We decided to use kraft paper in a versatile product and explain how it's made in simple terms so you can see exactly how it's made and what ingredients make it environmentally friendly and a better choice than standard paper. Then we'll give you some advice on how to incorporate Kraft paper into your business.
How is kraft paper made?
Kraft paper products are made using the kraft paper process, which, like other paper production methods, involves the chemical conversion of wood into wood pulp. The structural components of wood are lignin and cellulose. Since lignin does not make a good paper, it must be separated from cellulose. For this, wood chips are cooked in a "white liquor" made of sodium sulfide and sodium hydroxide. They break down lignin and cellulose, leaving behind solid wood pulp and "black liquor." The wood chips are now pulped and screened to remove any larger pieces. The pulp is washed to remove any residual cooking liquor and can then be made into various paper products.
Why is kraft paper better than regular paper?
So how does the kraft paper process compare to other paper production methods? First, kraft paper is stronger because of its low lignin content and high sulfur ratio. It also doesn't involve extensive bleaching, which reduces the strength of the paper and increases manufacturing costs.
Unlike other methods, it can use all types of wood, including resinous pine and bamboo, which are missing from traditional papermaking processes. Additionally, since almost all chemicals used in the process are recovered and reused, it is a sustainable solution for regeneration. The main by-products not recovered are turpentine and tall oil, which are used for other manufacturing purposes. Now that you have a basic understanding of how kraft paper is made, here are some ways you can implement kraft paper in your work. Don't worry; it's not just helping the environment. Certain qualities of kraft paper material also make it helpful for your business.
